Alan Mowbray was born on August 18th, 1896 in London in the United Kingdom with the birth name Ernest Allen.  Before becoming involved in acting he served in the British Army during World War I.

After he completed his service he then became involved in acting working first as a stage actor.  After gaining some experience in London he moved to the United States and found work  with the Theater Guild from 1923 through 1929.  Mowbray also appeared in a number of Broadway productions during this time such as, "Sport of Kings", "These Modern Women" and "The Amorous Antic".

As the sound era came about in films he began to embark on a film career mostly portraying character parts.  Some of his earlier on film roles he added to his resume were roles in, "Alexander Hamilton" (1931), "Sherlock Holmes" (1932), "A Study in Scarlet" (1933), "Becky Sharp" (1935), "My Man Godfrey" (1936), "Terror By Night" (1946) and "My Darling Clementine" (1946).

He returned back to the theater after a long break in 1963 with a role in the stage production of, "Enter Laughing".  He is also remembered for his roles on the television shows, "Colonel Humphrey Flack" (1953-1954) and "The Mickey Rooney Show" aka "Hey, Mulligan" (1954-1955).

Along with him being a working actor he was also involved in screenwriting.  Mowbray was also one of the founding members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).  Alan was also a member of Britain's Royal Geographic Society.

Alan Mowbray married only once to Lorayne Carpenter in 1927, and they had two children and remained married until he passed away on March 25, 1969 in Hollywood, California from a heart attack.  His remains are buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
